Echuca is located on the Murray River at the border of Victoria and New South Wales and is a town rich in history, much of which can still be seen today. Home to the historical
Port of Echuca, which was one of Australia's largest inland river ports which for many years was the main ship-building centre for the river transport industry. Today, several paddle steamers cruise along the Murray River delivering a thriving tourist trade. You can take a ride on the historic PS Pevensey, built in 1910 in nearby Moama and still containing its original steam engine. This ship featured as 'The Philadelphia' in the 1980s television mini-series 'All the Rivers Run' featuring Sigrid Thornton and John Waters.
The Port of Echuca contains many original buildings including pubs, a blacksmith and a brothel. The authenticity of the area is completed by the dirt road through the precinct, giving you the feeling of taking a step back in time.
