The RSL, full name Returned Services League, first started in 1916 to support servicemen returning from World War I. Since then, the RSL has evolved to what you see today: an entertainment hub that also provides assistance to veterans and their families.

The biggest RSL in Australia is West HQ (also known as the Rooty Hill RSL), dubbed the 'Vegas of Sydney's West'. Their calendar is jam-packed with events and shows, they have countless food and drink options, and more than 50,000 members. They also have five-star accommodation, so if you're not from the Sydney area you can make a weekend of it.

Step into any RSL club, and you'll immediately feel the sense of tradition and respect. One thing that you will notice is wartime artifacts typically on display in the lobby. You will also notice that some RSL clubs pay honour to veterans where everyone stands to pay tribute to our fallen by listening to an Ode and a rendition of The Last Post. Some RSLs do this every night (typically at 6pm), like the Moe RSL, others may do it less often. The venue goes quiet except for the Ode being read out and the haunting melody of The Last Post, which is a pretty powerful moment. Is this something your local RSL does?
