Lovely old pub with a new feel. Staff in all areas were lovely. Good and drinks was also very good.

We spontaneously booked a room for one night as we were only passing through. We weren't expecting much as we had already seen our room online. But when we checked in it turned out that it was a completely different room. It was very run down, the furniture was very old and the mirror was half broken. We were visited by two beetles that evening. One came out of my towel. The fan was also so dusty that we could never turn it on. The smell in the room was very disgusting as it was a mixture of smoke, cooking fat and mould. As I said, we weren't expecting much but this was really the worst room we've ever stayed in after a year of travelling around the world. You can get much better guesthouse rooms for the same price. It really isn't recommended! This review only applies to the hotel rooms, not the pub.

We came for the Mexican, upon good recommendation, and we weren't disappointed. The courtyard of the pub has been transformed into a little slice of Mexico. Tacos were excellent, kids tacos (which they assemble themselves, a great touch) were brilliant, and the churros great!
We were served by a lady named Destiny, and she was helpful, attentive and a good asset to the venue. Will definitely return when we visit Ballina next.

Went here for dinner. The Mexican food this pub serves is unbelievable good. Probably close to the best I've ever had. It was a surprise because I thought I was walking in to get a standard Aussie pub meal, but the Mexican and other food options including burgers were exceptional. Has to have a very good chef I'm guessing. Great prices too. Absolutely 5 stars!

Came thinking we were have a pub meal and left shocked at the quality of the Mexican food that came out.

Full of unique flavours that worked perfectly. Has to be one of the best in Oz.

I asked for a quiet room as I had to get up early to drive a truck the next morning.
They stuck me in a room right above jukebox speaker, and pool table where some loud mouth yobbo just didn't know how to hold a normal conversation. Yelling his head off!

Great place if you want to drink and party. Avoid if you enjoy sleeping as the noise from the bar went until at least 2.30am. And the street lights came straight through the curtains.
My husband booked for the reasonable price and good location.
If we were here to party it would have been perfect ?

This used to be a lovely place to meet friends and have a lovely meal. Unfortunately times have changed. Being renovated doesn't mean treating customers rudely. We ordered fish chips and salad and were given a lump if thick stale battered fish plonked on top of PEAS and warm old chips. After asking about salad, was informed that will be extra $7. We couldn't eat anything, place was dirty and different staff. Prices that used to be reasonable have jumped without the good food.

Don't be fooled..stay away...it is so bad I wish I could give no stars if I could.
Waste of our time and money.

Went for dinner last night and it was great! The lamb cutlets were delicious and the service was really friendly. My girlfriend wasn't sure about the anhcovies in the ceaser salad so she went for the mushroom Bahn mi. The chef put the ceaser dressing on the side of the bahn mi so she could taste it for next time and she thought it was great. Very welcoming atmosphere from the staff. Will be back!

Not family friendly - Accomodation is not insulated so no sleep until bar closes. Bathroom locks were broken in the unisex bathroom and in the one that did lock the bath tub (under the shower head) was blocked so water filled and when it finally drained the bottom of the bath was left slimy. Out of the two rooms we rented only one had a kettle which also subsequently had one 1 set of soap and shampoo/conditioner for 4 people. The top bunk didn't have a working ladder as the rungs were missing which left the side poles easily flailing around. And no chain to latch the door for extra safety and tv didn't turn on.
I did book through the hopper app and it had no mention of the pub underneath or photos to show this, which is no fault of the owners. Part of the property is under construction, the bar staff whom checked us in didn't explain the back gate system correctly and we opened the wrong gate also never mentioned where bathrooms were located. More suited to non families and party goers!
Also wifi password on the wall in a hallway wouldn't work.

Unwelcoming staff. Got 2 drinks and wine was way below line. Understand they are renovating but listening to line dancers in a restricted area madness. Food way over priced. Lazy bar staff. I got the end of a bottle and to lazy to open a new one so I could get what I paid for. Do yourself a favour and walk down to the new wine bar one block up and get excellent service. Drinks a bit more but food way better for what you get

Great pub, renovations are awesome. Finally a friendly pub worth going or checking out in Ballina. Great decor and atmosphere, burgers are excellent too. Long live the Australian Hotel

Food was OK, there was a shortage of tables with large open spaces around. Consequently it felt uncomfortable to eat there. Decor was dated . Separate area for TV to watch sport along with a dartboard. Staff were very nice and pleasant. Overall not a nice place to sit and eat but OK if you just want to stand and drink or play pool or darts

The Australian Hotel (The Aussie) is a Ballina icon. It has something for everyone. Great food, lounge bars, function rooms and a beaut beer garden.

The Aussie provides a range of social events which I understand will continue to improve with the extensive renovations and cheerful face lift.

Stopped at Ballina on trip back from Qld. Needed food to feed the family. Found this gem. We had fried chicken burgers, cheese burgers and popcorn chicken and chips. All of it was very good. I'd recommend you try it if you stop in Ballina.

Went to the Australian Pub for my birthday yesterday 8th April, for the first time. Place seemed ok till we had a look at the menu. Not a single steak or even a parmi on the menu. The whole menu was bland and not inviting. So ordered cutlets only to be given 3 cutlets and the rest of the plate was beans. No real veg or chips. The bar also does not cater for people with diabetes. There was no alcoholic no sugar options available.
Also, the meals are severely overpriced. $17 for salt and pepper squid that come out in a bowl still dripping in oil.
I understand that there was a flood over 12 months ago. But it was extremely disappointing and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

This Pub was on my no go list for years. However The new Owners are really turning this place around. As of Writing in March 2023 there are major renovations taking place and the Food and Service is now Excellent. Currently one of my top 2 pubs to eat at in Ballina.
Give this place another shot.

The hotel is currently being renovated after the recent floods but don't let that out you off. The rooms are clean and tidy, aircon and TV. If you want a cheap good night's sleep after a great meal in the bar this is for you.

We had beautiful fish, chips and salad..they have great menu available. We sat outside in outdoor eating area. Very casual and a pleasant dining out experience.

Recently my family and friends booked a large table for a birthday celebration. The food and service was above and beyond. A complimentary birthday cake was supplied in a matter of minutes.
Can't express highly enough, great service.
We will support you again.

We checked in and then checked out within an hour. It's a pretty dirty, smelly, unclean place to stay. Didn't feel like a safe place to stay with kids. We spoke with the customer service lady about our experience and she tried to get me to jump through hoops to get a refund and was pretty rude to deal with. Overall a disappointing experience. Other than that hotel, the trip was great :)

Absolutely awesome service from Brad and Debi. From the time of checking in, we felt completely welcomed and were blown away by the atmosphere of the beer garden. The service and food in the Bistro was excellent... highly recommend the chilli prawns!
The room was clean and spacious and could not ask for a better location. 10/10 ⭐️�'�🌈😘

Five of us ate here tonight..good service ..meals simple but tasty..1 meal was gluten free and staff struggled to get order right....management readily acknowledged thevissue and without request refunded price of meal..which had been eaten...this gesture was not expected much appreciated and indicates a great attitude to customer service...we will be back!

Had lunch at the Aussie today and could not fault anything. Food was amazing, cooked to perfection. Very clean and lovely staff. Highly recommend.

Wonderful event venue. Efficient and friendly staff. Delicious meals. Comfortable accomodation. Reasonable prices. Lovely decor. Beautiful beer garden. Amazing mural wrapped around the large outdoor stage.

Nice old building. Cheap clean rooms. Bed comfy. Has shared bathroom facilities. Rooms surprisingly quiet when live music going on down stairs. Only issue is the light shining directly into the windows which makes it appear like daylight throughout the whole night.

Went for dinner last night, food was great, meal sizes are large which was great too. Ice cold beers. Large front bar area with variety of sports to watch, dinning area out the back as well as large outdoor dining and entertaining area with pool table and stage for bands and shows etc. Staff were all super friendly.

Stopped by for a drink, ended up coming back for dinner and more drinks. Cozy local pub that turned into quite the happening at night, when the live DJ started spinning his records. Food was good, staff were friendly, and prices were reasonable.

Booked a table for 1315 got our meal at 1545.The front of house staff tried their best and even when the owners turned up they cleared glasses but didnt offer any actual help.Never going back.Hoping every holiday maker to the coast reads this and goes somewhere else also.You have our details if you want dispute the @ The Australian.

Good service. Food has been great when we have eaten there. They often have live music in the beer garden. New owners have really spruced it up and it gets a good crowd now. We enjoy it!

Rooms were basic, but very clean, and very reasonably priced.
Bistro was great, friendly service, great food and generous servings.
Sports bar was very impressive.
Highly recommend stopping in.

My steak and Prawns were amazing.
But, the service was fantastic.
Beth really looked after me tonight.
I will be back tomorrow night for the pasta.

I havent been to the Australian for a few years but was impressed by my recent visit. The new owners have tastefully updated the pub without losing its old world charm. The staff were extremely friendly, rooms were clean and comfortable and the beer was cold! Well done team!

Icy cold beer and friendly faces. Great value for money meals. Proper old school pub where you're just as likely to be served a beer by the owner, or the chef will join the diners to chat all things food. Love your work Team Aussie

I have been to the Aussie a number of times over the last couple of years. I can't praise the staff enough for the great job they do. The food is great - well-priced with lots of options and very tasty. It's a nice comfortable environment, ideal for a relaxing time or for a special occasion. Most of all, the staff are fantastic. Everyone is friendly and will do all they can to make you enjoy yourself. Would definitely recommend coming to the Aussie and will be back again. Jeff

Spent a weekend at the Hotel, the staff and food were amazing. I ordered the fish tacos and just finished them. Didn't have to worry about covid as the Pub had it all under control. The bistro is great value for money and beer garden is perfect for families. Gaming area good for punters and beer prices on point. Would definitely be back again.
