Great location. Reception doesn't open until 9.30am which is a bit odd, but staff is very friendly. Rooms and bathrooms are nice, good value for money.

In fact, when I booked Backpackers Imperial Hotel, I knew that the reviews were quite bad, but after reading the reviews carefully, they were all unexpected events. After I made special confirmation, I felt that these should be controllable, but the facts proved me wrong. First of all, their counter arrives late and leaves early, which is very inconvenient for check-in and check-out. Again, I used the shower on the first floor on the first night, and the water temperature was very low. When I returned to the room, there was no heating inside, and I was so cold that I couldn't sleep. After the reaction the next day, they told me that the water temperature on the second floor was higher. I turned on the heater, but I didn't know that the device that looked like a music player was a heater. I pressed it to turn it off. I studied it for a long time and put a book underneath it to use it.

Good?hotel.
First, the good points of this hotel: the location is excellent, the beds are comfortable (in private rooms)
and the kitchen is spacious (though it becomes a nightmare around January). The building has historical charm (you might need a bodybuilder to open the windows) Additionally, there is the occasional surprise of a fire alarm going off once or twice a month at night, offering the thrilling experience of watching the fire department in action.
As for the drawbacks, if you're in a third-floor room, you might wake up to pigeons watching you sleep.

If you want to have an interesting experience in Hobart, I recommend this hotel.

it's a good place to crash if you are on a budget. The rooms are not great, but you meet some interesting people in the dining, lounge and rec areas. communal bathrooms (mens and ladies) are old but functional.

Lived here for over a year due to housing issues and I'm grateful but it's a nightmare to cook and because of poor walls did not get my bond back. That's okay I live in a new apartment with all amenities for $70 more per fortnight and so happy. ? Also don't have to deal with French people with constant marijuana and being loud after 10pm.

Never again.
The hostel is dirty. The carpets of the corridors are dirty. The smell of the kitchen almost made me puke. Food on the floors of the storage room. Clearly too small for the number of rooms they have.
The atmosphere is weird. A mixture between a high school, and a rehab centre. People sleeping on the coaches overnight.
The room was over priced for what it was. The bathrooms were not too bad.
I have been in many hostels in my life. That one is bad !!!

Very poor service from receptionist. He try to charge the payment without permission from card owner. Just wonder how could he become a reception manager. Room is small and dusty.

Worst experience I've ever had with a business.
Staff accepted $160 overpayment in cash and when I went to discuss that I'd accidentally given them too much they denied this.
Room was absolutely filthy.
Had signed contract for long term student accommodation, price ended up being $75 more per week than agreed on.
Was given one week notice to leave without any explanation and kicked out onto the street.
Deposit wasn't refunded because of stain on matters protector which was already there.

Very good location in Hobart CBD, you can easily park your car in the street if you are ready to pay the expensive price of 5$/hour (but good news it's free during the night)

Very simple room but it was clean.

If you use the kitchen bring your own towel since there is only very dirty one available.

They need to make their T&C's clearer for group bookings online. I tried to cancel 1 person for a refund of all nights excluding the first as stated in the confirmation email but we were told that's not possible. quite annoyed.

The room was dirty with a sticky substance over the window, rubbish on the windowsills. No hot water in the female bathroom. The entire building is very run down. Only good thing is the location...but next time I would just stay at the YHA

A friend and I stayed here for 2 nights. The experience was mixed. We arrived only to be told that the female dorm we booked was overbooked so we were moved to a mixed dorm. Not perfect but we had no alternative so okay. In the room there was no blanket on one bed though they brought one up after I inquired. The common areas are nice (lots of lounge chairs etc.) tho the floors, ceiling and walls are rather bleak. The kitchen is really crowded at meal times so it's hard to really prepare a meal there.
In total our stay here was okay-ish. Other hostels were all booked out and this one is cheap so okay.

It wasn't as bad as the reviews. I didn't get stolen anything and didn't catch any sickness in there. There are actually people cooking there and socializing. An interesting experience was - One night I come back through the night entry and there was a girl rolling a joint at the door. I got in, went up the stairs, and I saw a kid having fun in the lounge with her parent. It's rare where a place can have such real diversity of people and openness.

Central city hostel, very barebones but does what it says on the tin. Great location but pretty bare inside.

Room was fine but smelled like someone had dumped a bottle of air freshener in it for my entire 2 day stay, next room over smelled terrible so likely them trying to cover a leak.

Stairs with no lift access so non wheelchair accessible.

Staff friendly on the phone, rang ahead to let them know I'd be a late check in. They thankfully have a service to leave keys out in lockboxes for collection for late arrivals.

Room was disgusting, stains all over the walls, wooden floors with paint missing! The bathrooms smelt so strongly of pee I found myself not wanting to have a shower. My windows was broken and I had to use a jar of Nutella to hold it open. I wish I'd paid the tiny bit more to stay at YHA....truly the only redeemable factor was a soft bed. However in saying that the doonah did not even cover the mattress and my feet were poking out half the night. Worst hostel I've stayed in Australia

Had a horrible experience with the lady at the reception this morning who blew up on me just for enquiring about roughly how many people share a bathroom on one floor. She went into making personal statements like "you need to get out of your own mind" as if it was the most bizarre question anyone had ever asked. The reception staff seems like they have some psychological issues. Glad I found out before booking. Please avoid.

I've lived in here as a long term guest, first in 2019 then 2022, for 3 and 6 months in each occasion. I recommend it for it's comfortable beds, hot shower, plenty amenities, comfortable lounge with fireplace, great location, lovely owners, and of course the best price you can find in the heart of the city.

My flight was cancelled due to bad weather while I waited in the plane on the tarmac due for Hobart. As a result I wasn't able to attend my booking and made staff aware of this immediately. I called several times and sent several emails and no one got back to me to offer a refund or a credit. Very frustrating being charged 80 dollars for something outside your control and not having staff assist you.

My partner and I booked a private Queen room here for Dark Mofo and chose it over the similarly priced YHA. We stayed at the YHA our last night because the Imperial did not give us an option to adjust our booking and we found the pair to be vastly different.

This is an older building with a bit of character, but also a lot of issues.
The huge ceilings and old floorboards made it difficult to heat. It's layout could be a little confusing, but something you could get used to.
The room was pretty dirty and lacked basic furniture (bed + locker, no tabletop space). On the other hand, the large common area was pretty cool and inviting.
I almost gave this place a 2 star rating just because of the showers though. The absolute worst I've ever seen in a hostel, with a minimum of 2 bandaids in each when I first went to use them. The floors and walls were shockingly dirty and the formerly white shower curtains were such a vibrant grimy yellow that I almost refused to touch them. This surprised me though, as the rest of the toilets/bathroom seemed very clean in comparison.

The staff were friendly to us on reception and considered changing rooms for us due to my leg injury and mobility issues. Unfortunately, there were no queen rooms on the ground or first floor.
There were lots of laminated paper signs up in the room and toilets with very specific rules. It seems they may have been burned before and felt the need to add new rules for each of these.
It seemed that a fair few of the people staying here were long time residents, but the ones we met were exceptionally nice.

- Note to the owner/Managers: "One single person of your team can literally destroy the reputation of your business".

- Writing it to highlight a situation that I had when checking out today, 1st of June 2022, where an "Asian woman" described like this because she didn't have any identification and didn't want say her name, was horrible on her customer service. She doesn't listen to the customer and acts like a robot. After a long stay in this Hotel, because its affordable price and good location, there was a mistake on my booking and she was charging me more that it was supposed to be. I tried to point it out, and the answer was... "IT DOES NOT MATTER, THE MACHINE (COMPUTER) IS PERFECT AND DOES NOT MAKE MISTAKES " ( Yes, out of loud) I believe that she forgot that the person behind the machine can make mistakes. Additionally, she told me that I was wasting her time, told me that would not call her manager and didn't solve my problem. I had to ask other guests for the number of the manager, who called me after 2 hours to say that I was right and it is going to be solved.

I can't believe, that a person like her, can be the front staff, receptionist of a hotel located in the heart of Hobart, where a lot of good people, experienced in customer service are begging for jobs.

For this reason, I will never come back, and do not recommend this place.

Just dont, I have traveled cheap and light globally - this place was a dive. More a homeless hostel than a backpackers. No bed bug bites so far, I guess it's two stars.

As some other reviews point out, you get what you pay for.
The service was terrible, the guy wouldn't let us book on arrival despite availability, made up some unbelievable reason for why it was impossible, and was pretty self satisfied and unhelpful.
Facilities what you'd expect. Basic facilities, general grime over the place but not filthy.
But we had a guy in our 4# mixed dorm, switching in the lights a bunch of times in the night, and hassling another girl in her bed at 3am, trying to jump into her bed on two occasions despite her loud protestations. I was blown away, totally not on. Told reception about it so we'll see what happens.

Staff are never happy always doom and gloom no light-hearted easy-going hostel vibes here
They are always serious never smiling friendly conversations forget that they jut want you to pay and leave them alone u have a problem they do not seem to care
They're pretty much like robots
Rooms they are clean as can be expected for a hostel beds are comfortable kitchen problematic it doesn't open intel 7am so if you need to make a breakfast before you leave to work oh well that's not going to happen it actually seems to be closed more than it is open reception is only open some of the time so if you need something forget that it is not the worst hostel I have stayed it but it's definitely it the top 3
