Dropped in for a meal and a couple of quiet beverages.
The down to earth country atmosphere will never grow old in my opinion.
Listening to tales about the area is a great way to pass an hour or so.
The food was great and plentiful and the beer was cold.
What more can a man want.

Done a group walk-in on a Saturday during lunch. Staff were more than accommodating arranging tables so we were all seated together. Meals came out quickly and were superb. Would definitely recommend if your driving past during meal times head in, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We were welcomed into Castle Hotel for a meal even though the other booked guests didn't arrive as they don't usually do meals on a Sunday night. We arrived at 5.40 and was very kindly welcomed to stay for a lovely, well cooked meal of fish and chips and a chicken snitzel. We were the only two people but were still more than happy to accommodate us. I had contacted the hotel the previous day and was told that they had guests staying so happy for us to come and have a quick meal. Never felt rushed and the lady behind the bar was so friendly and lovely to chat with. We are very grateful that they cooked just two of us a meal. Thank you so much, we'll tell others of your quaint and quirky hotel. BTW we only ate there so can't comment on accommodation. Kerrie

Dropped in for dinner and a drink, turned out it was pizza night (Wednesday), amazing pizzas. Proper country pub, with honest food like grandma used to make and amazing service from some incredible, friendly people. This is the perfect country pub. Well worth a visit and a pint. Thanks folks, next time we're in Tassie will go out of our way to drop by.

Due to roadworks on the Midlands Highway and being a former Coach Driver, we decided to take the slightly longer but more Scenic alternative route back from our weeke d at the Tulips with my visiting Sister in Law.
We walked in at about 16:30 - 16:45 to be greeted by a 'so, what do you want?'
There were a bunch of young bikers, walkers obviously enjoying the bar and seems we were an interruption.
Basically told, kitchen is closed, it is a Sunday of the Public Holiday and hinted to use the the loo and go...
Was very embarrassing and luckily not a group of people.
Sign outside said open but wasn't going to argue the point as people like that ... well...
Castle, Hmm seems the drawbridge was up.
Will go onto Derwent Bridge or Miena in future.

Most of the reviews on here refer to the food, which unfortunately we never had. We booked to stay three nights, arrived at 2pm to book in, as most hotels check in is after 2. We were told before booking in, "The kitchens closed, if you want a meal tonight make it before 5.45, and the hotels closed tomorrow s its a public holiday so no food. We asked about where to get food, she did not know, but we discovered a takeaway at the servo next door, so in fact she did know. The room was something from Fawlty towers, the ensuite had a packet door when closed would not open, the complimentary cereal packets were out of date. We were told we would be given two slices each of bread, which arrived, two slices cling film wrapped. The TV was something from the 70's and set top box. The mattress was good from the back ,no movement at all. Needless to say we only stayed one night. As it only 1 hour from Hobart we booked into a 5 star hotel for only $35 per night more. My honest advice, maybe get a feed here ( can't recommend as we never had any) and then stay somewhere else, unless you like to shoot deer as facebook page shows.

We visited this hotel for lunch on the way to Davenport from Hobart. We enjoyed the bar food. We ordered Fish and Chips, Burger and Pizza. They were really yummy. Bothwell is a historical place in the middle of Tasmania. This place is in the small city. Friendly staff and accomodated our request for dine in eventhough we were late for lunch. There is parking available. Dine in and Dine out optins also available.

Dropped in for lunch and although we were late for the lunch service the staff were very obliging and served us up a delicious meal. If you're in Bothwell do yourself a favour and drop into the castle hotel. The chef takes great pride in the food.

It's a true, small town country pub!
So it definitely had -
1. Very generous portions in each meal. (Steak sandwich so good, I had two. Lamb shanks in great gravy you will lick the plate. Battered fish like the good old days)
2. An adequate selection of beers (but you're not there for posh beer choices, really)
3. Friendly staff.
4. Photos of the Hotel going back to 1860! How COOL! But it's older than that....
5. A small quirky public bar filled with odds & ends (football trophies, stuffed Fox wearing sunglasses, old newspapers etc)

These are the establishments we MUST preserve. We must continue to frequent.
