Very well priced, clean, and generous portions! Ordered the 300gram steak and it was full of flavour, tender and with a nice char on the outside. Sweet Potato chips are also great.

Went for a drink and a feed. Nice ladies who we were served by. Pulled pork and gravy roll was yum. Hobart beer was an added bonus.

I have been going to Dr Syntax regularly for trivia/quizz night over the last few months. The staff are lovely and very personable. Great service always. The food has always been exceptional. Good size pub portions at great prices. However, the venue has sold recently and the quality and the size of the food has gone down considerably. For example, chicken wings used to be 6 full wings, for $10 now they are 6 part wings, for $12. Burgers were massive, they used to be a double patties, now they are 1/2 the size, for the same price.
This is very dissapointing as it has been wonderful while it lasted. Please pick up the game, go back to the way it was.

Incredible food and staff. Amazing service. Great prices and atmosphere. Cannot fault the place at all although I would recommend booking for meals as it fills up fast which is no shock. Cannot comment on the accommodation as I have not stayed with them.

Came here last weekend with a group of friends. 5-6 steaks were over cooked. Other friends didn't finish their meal because it didn't taste nice. We have been coming to this place for years. But they have really dropped the ball and the food is shocking. It's very sad that the best food they do is their onion rings. Plus also the bigger man in the bar had bad sweat all over his face. Which doesn't really make sense because he moved and made drinks at snail pace. don't waste your time or money. Becuase we won't ever be back.

My partner,2 young children and I started dining here around 3 years ago and in our children's winter soccer season, often stop in here for lunch after a game, it has and always is the best service, staff are absolutely beautiful people and the meals are always delicious!!
They never have an issue with fitting us in for a late booking and are always smiling, happy and friendly.

We discovered this hotel almost by accident looking for somewhere for dinner. Walk through the front bar to the dining room at back. Very busy around dinner time, lots of families. Usual menu, but good, portion sizes generous and not too expensive. Staff were fast and friendly as well.

Had a delicious lunch there with friends. Table service for both food and drinks; great menu; great food. Air conditioned inside but on warm days an undercover outside eating area which is very pleasant. Can get very [popular so book ahead if possible. A large carpark ensures easy parking - access from both Sandy Bay Rd and a narrow access from Queen St.

We're staying up the road and just wanted to grab a drink on our walk.
Looks like an old dive bar from the road but we were so happy we popped in. Ending up staying for dinner and YUM!

Customer service was great, lovely accommodating and informative staff. Food was delicious. Drinks were reasonably priced.

Food was decent. Service was terrible as the lady who served us was rude. First when my father ordered a medium well done steak she smirked and grunted. Fair enough, you might not like well done steak and a lot of people don't but you're not the one eating eat, so keep your opinions to yourself. Second, she had a nasty attitude and when I asked if everything was ok she replied with "Yes, but you're booking was at 5:30pm and we have another large group to attend". Ok, fair enough, we arrived at 5:40pm and all of us didn't finish ordering a little past 6pm but that doesn't excuse the attitude.

First time here due to a recommendation and this will definitely be the last. Disappointed as we came here with a positive attitude and we left feeling as if our business wasn't wanted and felt uncomfortable and unwelcomed.

Rooms are great for price. Service amazing, food great, great location.

Had a brilliant meal tonight. Steaks were cooked to perfection, chips are divine, the cob loaf was lovely. I honestly can't say enough about how good it was

I stayed here for 9 days in early March.
Overall, my experience staying here was very positive. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the check-in process was easy. To check in, head to the front section on Sandy Bay Road. There's a bar and bistro, although I did not try the food.
There's plenty of parking out the back if you hire a car. Close to public transport. A short walk from Wrest Point, Battery Point, Salamanca Place, Constitution Dock/Franklin Wharf area, and Hobart City. There's a petrol station next door if you need fuel, supplies or an ATM.
The rooms are on the small side, but it was big enough for myself. Beds were comfy. They give you copious amounts of tea and coffee (thank you). The air-conditioning kept me warm. There's an ironing board and an iron. The bathroom was great and the water pressure was good. They give you shampoo, conditioner, soap etc.
The rates were very good compared to other places around the city.
As this also has a pub attached, be aware that there can be some noise, but it generally dies down after 10:00 pm.
I was quite surprised in the Wi-Fi. I had no drop-outs every, single night I needed to complete some work!
I would recommend staying here if you want a cheap, clean and convenient place to stay.

Went for dinner. Prior to getting there we perused the extensive menu.
That should have sounded the alarm bells.
One ordered fish. The portion served would have been no more than 100g yet cost $32.
The lamb curry was devoid of lamb, basically a bowl of chickpeas.
The roast lamb had a disnstinctive odor to it.
All in all a terrible dining experience.
Staff were very friendly though.

Dined 2 nights in a row because the 1st nights meal was terrific.

Dining room was very warm, with a very warm day out side no aircon. Food was excellent, especially there steaks, well presented and service was a bit of a wait, 30 minutes. But it was packed with people as well. $13 for a craft beer.

Went here the other night for a last minute dinner and the staff were so friendly and accommodating! The food was absolutely delicious and of a generous size! Thank you for a great experience! We will be back!

Clean and tidy. The bar downstairs is great and not too loud at night. Facility's are great. The rooms and small, but so is the cost! The staff keep the please very clean and no bad smells!

Group of 5 met for lunch, would advise booking. Very friendly helpful staff. Food was excellent and very good pricing. Service was quick. No pressure to eat and leave. Got quite busy . Parking at rear and some can be found on Sandy Bay Rd. Highly recommended.

The staff here are so welcoming as well as helpful. I had a day tour in Hobart and needed their help, they went far and beyond what I have ever experienced in a hotel. Beautiful hotel with so much charm.
I highly recommend and will always book when ever I visit.

Excellent food!! Ate there 2 nights in a row and would have gone a third, but discovered it too late. Had the roast lamb first night - huge serve and delicious! Second night had the seafood moray - rich and too die for! Best pub food I've had in a longtime - large and extensive menu, which is unusual these days. Will definitely be back for more when back in Hobart!

Stayed a night here, lovely large clean room. Spotless bathroom. Fully equipped, with tea and coffee and milk. Mattress needs an upgrade, room was very noisy from traffic, room was very light even with blinds down. Otherwise would give 5 stars for meals, location and cleanliness. Great atmosphere with plenty of TV's in eating areas to watch sport, and heaters were turned on to warm up outside areas. Staff super friendly.

4 meals, all above what was expected, prices on par with what you would expect, service was more than excellent, I would recommend every day if the week.. was hoping for a pub meal but got much more, high end for a discounted price. Will recommend and will return for sure

Today 4 of us were at Dr Syntax for lunch we have dined here a few times now always satisfied and a nice meals.
Three out of four of us today were happy with the meals but have to say that the slow cooked lamb curry was somewhat very disappointing.
It was more like a bowl of vegetables with a few bits of lamb which to me was not slow cooked or it would have fallen apart?
No curry detected at all was also supposed to have coconut in it but no taste of coconut at all as for a curry taste nothing I think maybe the curry mixture was waved over what was in the bowl was so looking forward to a lamb curry.
Service was great and the staff were quite friendly.

It may seem shabby on the outside, but that makes the modern, clean, comfortable hotel rooms even more of a welcome surprise. My room had two double beds (which were a little small for me), coffee and tea, ironing board, spare set of towels, and toiletries. The bathroom featured a luxurious modern rainfall shower. Although the hotel was fully booked, the noise from other rooms was minimal.

You might describe this as 'basic' accommodation but actually it was perfect - nothing could have been better - except maybe a longer bed.

Our lunch was excellent pork belly and seafood marina. Lovely fresh salad and vegetables. Great chips as a side. Meals beautifully presented and as we watched meals pass by, all were of top quality in presentation. Add in really efficient service and an eextensived drinks list. We'll be back.

Range of options on the menu was excellent and reasonably priced. The food was delicious, portion sizes good. ? staff were friendly.
