Been over 40 years since I've been here. More like a Hunting Lodge feel to it with beautiful fireplace and all the gorgeous timber work. Old photos all around of the area. Small lamps and ivy plants on all tables. Booth seating, tables, lounges, take your pick. The walled courtyard is charming.
Service was prompt, very friendly and professional. Food was absolutely delicious. My friend said his steak with mash and vegetables ($20.00 Tuesday night special) was so tender. I chose the Grilled Barramundi with asparagus, lemon potato fries with white, wine sauce. ($30.00) Absolutely superb. We had a truly enjoyable evening with excellent service, food and ambience. Definitely coming back. Location is central and arriving early we had no problems with off street parking.

Went here for the pub food.

As with most pubs, you get your usual bistro atmosphere.
Then food itself was delicious. The steak was cooker medium rare as ordered. There was a healthy amount of chips and salad on the side which was great. The garlic prawn pasta could use a bit more garlic as the flavour just wasn't quite there. The pizza was scrumptious and packed with cheese. The sweet potato chips were simply amazing. The portion size was massive and was hard to finish even with 3 people.

Manager on 24th of June in the afternoon rudely approached us to say that we should stop asking the staff to turn the heaters on even though it is the middle of winter and cold. Wouldn't have had an issue if the manager approached us nicely but the way it was delivered was below hospitality standards.

If you want an RSL-type pub that isn't as bland as an RSL and could almost pass as a big English pub then this is it. It has a nice layout which felt comfortable, especially the wooden tables near the (fake but still cosy) fire. And the food is great pub food. Worth the short drive.

Dined at the Great Northern recently ! Must say was easily one of the best dining experiences I have had in a LONG time. Was taken care of by two brilliant young members of staff, Charlotte and Ella who were extremely accomodating for my elderly mother as well as very friendly and polite !! Definitely deserve praise for their attentiveness and great service!

Food was exceptional with steak cooked to perfection. Loved the atmosphere of the Hotel as well !

Will definitely be back soon ! Thanks heaps guys :)

Unfortunately, a very bad experience at this pub due to the terrible attitude by one of the managers. 15% surcharge on the Easter long weekend and had to wait over an hour for food and then it came out freezing cold. When the manager was sent out to have a conversation, she was very dismissive and walked off mid conversation. It was handled terribly. This woman should not be a manager, she is unable to address paying customers concerns efficiently.

A deceptive shame.
In the middle of nowhere, this seemingly charming, leafy suburban pub. It is actually quite abrasive and stale.
The insular smiles of the staff bring on a familiar bore that is on par with the atmosphere and decor.
It could be a good pub. But for so many reasons, it's not.
Even the gaming staff's, once famous, shirts seem to have lost their former appeal.
As for racism against dogs... there are 3 separate outdoor areas that could be enhanced by the presence of some well-behaved, cute as hell, puppies!
Like dogs more!

In saying this. It could suit well being a railway station, transit lounge, when the new metro station opens.
Just add a prominently positioned timetable screen in the main bar.

A good pub that has potential to be great. The best bits: great beer garden, beautiful, cosy decor inside and good coverage of TVs that always have the cricket on. Their $4 triple happy hour on Saturday arvos is awesome too. However, outside Saturday afternoons there isn't an affordable option for beer so it makes it hard to come regularly. Food is reasonably priced but pretty basic pub grub and no gluten-free options.

Well i give it 5 stars is the atmosphere is good and there's plenty of room with little noise. There is ample good tasting food at a reasonable price same with the beer. Park is not usually a problem and the star seem very friendly. Comfortable place for children at an affordable price.

So bitterly disappointed in our local. After taking our puppy to the outdoor area for weeks and many staff members telling us how cute he is, we encountered what could possibly be the rudest customer service from a staff member, telling us that the venue is not dog friendly. We totally understand this, but are somewhat perplexed as to how this only applied to my partner and I, not the couple sitting with a dog, a mere 15 metres away. The way in which we were spoken to is simply unacceptable, and uncalled for. A polite "sorry guys, we don't allow dogs here" would have sufficed, in place of barked orders, reminiscent of the schoolyard. To add insult to injury, be wary of the step outside that appears to be way too steep, with no indication of it's existence, and could lead to someone falling and breaking 3 bones in their arm like I did a few months ago.

Nice pup n great beer garden - average pup food.
Really amazed to find it's not dog friendly even after having seen dog there - perhaps change that policy to attract Sunday walkers to come in... perfect setting for a dog friendly pup

Fantastic staff, great food, good drink options. Personally, I love going during the day (I work nights) as it isn't terribly busy and the quiet atmosphere allows me to get work done, read, crochet, etc in peace. However, evenings the post-work crowd brings a great vibe to the place and trivia night is so much fun on Tuesdays!

Couldn't fault a single thing about The Great Northern. Staff are friendly, food was quick and extremely good quality. Loved my steak and the parmi also went down a treat.
Recommend popping in for dinner or lunch

Arrived on a Sunday to treat my old man to a Pork Roast for lunch and a couple of beers. Great atmosphere in a sun filled courtyard at the rear of the pub if you choose to sit outside. Service is fast and friendly and the food selection and prices are on par without feeling gouged !! The roast was plentiful and tasty. I'd go back on a weekday for all the specials they offer at fantastic prices. Parking on side street. Do yourself a favour and give it a try.

Very lively and busy pub with lots of tables. Fairly standard beers on tap so don't expect anything craft. I ordered the eye fillet steak and it was delicious. A little more cooked then I ordered, but was juicy and tender. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

$15 steak night sirloin was vile, like what you would expect in an aged care facility (sad but true). Grey meat, wilted weak salad, hot chips, Boyfriend got the same but mash and veg, piddly serving of veg and the sauce!!!! Was congealed and purple in color, the pepper sauce must have been made by the rankest ingredients, tasted like pepper and dish soap! The mushroom sauce was congealed, texture of baby food! Felt like I had completely thrown off any health goals after that disappointing meal. Funniest part was, I had an argument about my bf wearing thongs to dinner, didnt matter in the slightest. Never again. Still feel sick about the quality.

Ordered the 400g rib eye expecting they'd know how to cook a steak to rare it came out blue. When I picked it up from the window the cook gave me looks as if he wasn't sure if it was going to be good... so I'm going to say the kitchen is not competent to cook a steak rare.

The food here is excellent and the staff seem to be super helpful and friendly. Tonight a barman named Tom, got us an extra table so we could sit in the lounge area for the trivia competition. My sirloin for $15 was great value. The wife had a beef burger which she loved. My only issue is that the noise is drowning out the MC, a Frenchman named Antoine who is doing a sterling job in impossible circumstances. Please fix this issue ASAP?

I went tonight 2/6/2021 for dinner with my mates, ordered a eye fillet which was $39, 2 pastas and a parmi. One side of eye fillet was burned to charred coal and other side was okay. We asked for replacement and got Schnitzel; what a disappointment for paying $39 for eye fillet.

Good food at reasonable prices, good range of drinks now including non-alcoholic beer (Carlton Zero). Staff always friendly. Dining area is spread out, clean and comfortable. Nice place to meet up or a family meal.

Great outdoor beer garden, love that families are welcome here. It's very cosy inside and they have a great menu. I had a steak sandwich which was a great size however a bit dry and lacking on the sauce front

Food ranges from good to great, but on the pricier side. Beer selection is very poor, only beer from multinationals. No quality beer or independent beers. Not even in bottles or cans.

The Great Northern Hotel is located on the corner of Pacific Highway and Mowbray Road in Chatswood. Parking is available around the back of the hotel in Bowen Street. On arriving you will notice that all entrances are block except for the entrance on Pacific Highway. This is so to ensure that all visiting patrons sign-in to assist COVID-19 tracing if required. The hotel provides free WiFi.The hotel has daily meal specials. As I went on a Tuesday, I had the $15 steak with chips. On Monday, a roast is available for $10 and they have $13 burgers on Friday. I'm not sure what the T&C's are - you might have to join to get these specials. I went with a friend who was already a member. Membership costs $10. An la carte menu is also available. The food was OK, as pub food goes. I'd recommend it.The Great Northern Hotel provided a safe and friendly environment to spend a leisurely lunch.

I've been a local for years and I really do want to love this place. I'm a very short walk away and I wish this was the place I go to for a steak when I don't feel like cooking, or to meet my friends... but the food is consistently bad. I gave it another shot this week and the calamari was floury and awful (kudos for serving size, though), the steak was tasteless and very well done when I had asked for medium, the vegetables were hard... I want to give you my money, but also I want a nice meal so I can relax in your gorgeous beer garden with fairy lights and enjoy what I'm eating... I'll try again in a year. PS - the mashed potatoes were good.

Great beer garden, friendly staff and the food is pretty good. Not a particularly amazing beer selection but something for most tastes. Given the location I was pleasantly surprised. It's my girlfriend's local so I go a fair bit. Definitely worth a look.
