Mitchell River Tavern

Dinner only, didn't stay, but the bistro was immaculate. Lovely fresh meals, service was excellent and flexible when we met a friend for drinks, then dined after they left. Perfect portion sizes too.

After being referred to by some friends we had a very nice meal on a wet and windy night. Service was great and staff were very friendly. Meals were a generous size and we liked the dining room wasn't noisy like some places. Will definitely be back.

We were recommended by friends maybe six months ago..we live in Lakes and only venture into Bairn. weekly for lunch. When we arrived we were very very pleased to find such a well run and clean hotel with such care to detail.The food was so refreshingly different from the usual pub grub. This definately was not pub grub. There was distinct care and imagination in the food. Sadly the last 3 or 4 times, that imagination was gone. I have employed many chefs in my time, and understand how temperamental they can be.
However it looks like back to basics now. Back in the late 80s we were paying our wonderful female chef $1000 weekly because she brought the punters in. Hope you find another as good as the last. Until then. Ross Barker

I was in Bairnsdale for a professional course, travelled alone, chose Mitchel Tavern for proximity to Bairnsdale hospital, very convenient location, rooms are clean, nice restaurant in the main floor, provided nice dinner, staff is friendly, but they requested a copy of my ID and Credit card, like paper copy to be in file, which was strange.
Rooms are outdated.
But great value for money.

Very disappointing the menu has been dumbed down to a basic bar menu and the staff were very disorganised and not trained very well. I think there has been a major change in the kitchen and it has ruined what was our go to place for dinning with friends. I feel a bit embarrassed for telling friends how good the food and menu was , to arrive and find a very ordinary experience on offer
