This hotel was so cool! The building it so old and has so much character. The furniture and light fixtures are all unique and the bed is comfy. We really enjoyed our dinner at the hotel bar/restaurant and slept well here before continuing on with our journey the next day. The park just outside has loads of walking trails where you are sure to see Roos and lots of birds.

What an awesome country pub with great service and great food. Laughed all night with the staff and owner so fulfilling to meet such down to earth ausies makes me proud to be an Australian seeing we still have some real Australia left in Australia. Keep up the good work will be back and recommend to anyone if your thinking about doing it just do and visit Melrose and get a great taste of country. ??'???'??

Had their Sunday roast and apple and quandong pie. It was absolutely bang on the money. Great service and atmosphere too.

Fantastic location and good ambience. But the customer service is pathetic. We were served by a young lady at the bar counter. I think her name is "Louise", overheard another staff calling her name. Took our order with ZERO interest and looked like she is doing us a favour. She was totally rude, had biggggg ATTITUDE. Felt like we were asking for free food from their business. I thought is it just us, but happened to stay at the bar for sometime sipping my beer. Then noticed that she is the same to other customers aswell. Saw she serving few others happily but it turns out that they were her friends. She went and started chatting to them on the other side of counter and wasn't interested to take the orders of people standing at the counter. Second time an old lady served us , seems like she is the owner of the pub. She was great.
Word of advice to "Louise" : Please look for another job if you are so unhappy serving customers.
Will we be happy to go back??? Probably NO.

As I had entered the restaurant on saturday night the place seemed off.

I was greeted and took my seat as the waitress took my order her body language was disgusting she had no manners.

The food was okay I guess, I went up to pay for my order I was then serverd by the owner who was the most disgusting disrespectful person I've ever met. When I asked a question about Melrose she answered " do I look like your guide".

The young lady that works there is the best waitress I've ever met so kind, sweet and compassionate.

Overall wasn't a very good experience don't recommended not family friendly.

We booked here for dinner for a group of 20 of us. There was a great buzz and atmosphere on arriving and was extremely busy.

Being such a large group in such a busy pub I was sceptical that they could pull it off. But they nailed it! The food came out super fast, everyone received what they ordered and the food was excellent.

There was a great range of special parmys - many of us had that and were not disappointed!

Thanks to the team of hard working staff making our night such a good one.

Great pub but make a booking for dinner. Lovely food, great service, nice atmosphere in old pub and side extension.

Stopped here for an impromptu lunch. What a pleasant surprise! Great service and beautiful food. Nothing too fancy. Great steak and gorgeous squid!!!Huge serves, true to Aussie country hospitality. We'll be back. Next time we will try the wines. Rumour has it that you can taste Bundaleer wines at this venue.

Went for dinner there last night following recommendations from locals.
Bar staff were less than friendly.
Our meals were close to the worst we've ever had. Roast pork was barely warm medallions rather than sliced and dried out and barely edible. The other meal, lamb yiros, was also barely warm with barely any lamb. If this is the best that the "top" hotel can offer in Melrose that's sad coz we think it it is a wonderful little town.

Friendly service. Lovely renovated historic building with indoor and outdoor seating. Pool table and TV, good pub menu. Can't go wrong.

My wife and I cant speak more highly about our experience. After finishing the Mount Roland loop walk we were treated to delicious meals and very reasonably priced beverages. Lovely staff and atmosphere.

Super disappointed to head to this pub for a drink on a Saturday night to only be turned away by the patrons at the front door that we couldn't due to a private function (wedding). Not sure how an entire pub can be closed to the public on a Saturday night of a long weekend.

Suggest the owner of this establishment thinks about allowing some areas for the general public as there would've been some good money turned away.

Pub is a beautiful building. Staff were lacking in any hospitality skills. Baked Barra with Asian salad was inedible. Fish was raw and I suspect still frozen. Asian salad consisted of rice noodles and little else. No Asian flavour at all. A blob of herb butter on the side. Dreadfully presented - this meal will go down as one of the worst meals I've been served . Everyone else's meals looked equally uninspired.

Perfect location just at the foot of Mount remarkable. Multiple trails are at the door step. Delicious food and good range of beers. Super fast service. The deck is perfect for an evening meal, drink, or any time of the day. The ensuite is disability wheelchair friendly and very spacious.

Booked accommodation for the RedTruck on way back from Wilpena Pound. Arrived at the North Star hotel around 2.45pm. Tried side door.. locked!.. tried front door.. it opened so we walked in but it was dark and no one was there!!.. walked outside and called the hotel. No answer! Went inside again and called the number... the phone in the bar rang.. no answer.
We checked the arrival instructions and it said that check in was 2 pm.. by this time it was around 3pm. Then the substitute chef for the night walked in after hearing the phone.. he was surprised to see us as they don't open until 4 pm on Wednesdays (!) ..we told him the door was unlocked. He immediately locked the door in the faces of 3 other people who wanted to get some food and drinks. He also didn't know anything about the accommodation side of it. After calling the owner- who was on their way to Adelaide apparently- we were finally given the key to the accommodation.

About that... having to go outside to the bathroom is definitely not what we were expecting when we booked this place!! .. and it was raining all night. Very ordinary accommodation.

Later around 6.40pm we went to get some dinner at the hotel. Only one guy was serving at the bar and quite a few people were lining up to order- but no one was there to take orders. We waited for a while and then thought we'd get a table that wasn't reserved. Found one without a reserve sign and sat down. My partner then tried to find a menu back at the line up... eventually got one and we decided what we would get.

I went to line up to order and the woman who had finally arrived to take the orders went over to the bar area to assist the one guy serving a lot of customers drinks. It was some minutes before she came back. Another person jumped in front of me to ask where her table was... and then the woman told them the table number that we had been sitting at!

Then she came to me and I asked about the table that didn't have the reserved sign as we were sitting there. Her response was that I should have come to the bar first as they were completely booked out. She also said that she was busy and on her own so there was only so much she could do. There was no one available to talk to at the bar when we arrived- she certainly was not there.

Seriously! Overall really poor customer service together with a dismissive and couldn't care less attitude. Maybe employ more staff and experienced staff who know how to treat guests.... and it's probably not a good idea to leave your premises unlocked and open since closing time the night before!!

Also having someone to greet guests.. or at least a contact via phone.. rather than leave them wondering what the hell is going on is a no-brainer.

Never again!

We had a reservation for dinner, it was our first time at the North Star. We didn't know where or who would seat us so we stood at the bar awkwardly for 10 minutes without any acknowledgement by the two female staff. It wasn't until I called out that we were pointed to our table. The food was OK, my friend's Thai salad was so far removed from a Thai salad though my battered fish was reasonably good.
Such a gorgeous pub, historic & the care factor zero of the staff would seriously deter us from returning or recommending. Owners/managers either need to put a rocket up their butts for anattitude change or training.... or both.

Awesome looking place and a great place to have dinner! They have entertainment during your meal and the food is delicious. Definitely recommend but I must say I have never stayed over night

We've been coming to this pub for years. Have noticed lately the quality of food has declined. The pub is nice on the inside, service was OK. Food, well average at best. Probably won't come back unfortunately.

The decor was amazing but our food wasn't. We spoke to two people about the meal we had with a Barra steak and Thai noodle salad, mentioning that the salad had no Thai favouring whatsoever . We wouldn't normally rate low preferring to speak personally and give feedback directly. Unfortunately we felt that the feedback was ambivalently received.

Do yourself a favour. I had the Moroccan beef and pecan pie. Generous portions that were delicious and beautifully presented.

Great place to eat after a had days ride. Plus the beers cold. Love the Decor cosy and friendly place.

We had lunch here on the way back to Adelaide.
It's a nice rustic looking pub in a beautiful rural SA location.
Unfortunately I cannot give more than 3 stars to the restaurant - the schnitzels were OK but not great. The lady taking our orders was brief with us because the kitchen was going to close shortly (it was 1:50pm, kitchen was closing at 2pm). On the whole it seemed to me that they weren't too pleased we came in so late.

Can't say enough good things about this place. Great vibe, aesthetically rustic & inviting, top spot! I especially like the vintage trucks out back converted into accommodation. The owners are a married couple & just really good people. Xxxx
