We went to the hotel for our Christmas function, the food was absolutely delicious and plenty of it, the atmosphere was great, and the staff were fantastic, definitely go there again

It was lovely to visit a historic building. Loved the external restoration and inside was well done. In fact they were painting in a section of the dining room.
The 2 girls were outstanding with their attention and service and were happy to have a quick chat.
And finally a place that gives water in nice drinking glasses, thank you ?
We did not sleep here.
The rump steaks were excellent. Cooked to perfection at medium-rare. It was great to see real roasted vegetables, not the usual 'steam roasted?' vegies most pubs/clubs offer.
I would suggest though, that the sweet potato be put in a little later as they roast quicker, they were somewhat shriveled up instead of being yummy and bulky, however they did taste great.
The house wines (from Gundagai I think) were excellent.
It's great to see support of local produce.
Yes, I'd eat here again.

Reading the reviews, I was a bit weary of coming to stay here with my son, although upon arrival, I was more than happy. The staff were very friendly and even upgraded my room free of charge, seeing as I had booked a room with one bed, not knowing. The rooms are a bit dated but what do you expect from an old country pub. Granted, the paint was a bit weathered on the walls, but I feel it adds to the character. The beds were comfortable, tv in the room worked fine, nice restaurant to have a meal with my son. Great spot to stop for the night in a bit of Aussie history if your not to fussy about things, if you are pay for more expensive accomodation elsewhere and stop whinging.

English feeling pub with great food, lots of drinks to choose from and a large weekly specials board! Definitely worth it a trip

We came for lunch to check out the local heritage after visiting the awesome Rail Heritage Centre down the road. There are a couple of pictures on the walls and some interesting architecture nearby. I didn't look in the back section as it was a bit dark looking and looked to be just people eating.

The garlic and rosemary focaccia was very large and dense. Not toasted. Not as expected. Comes with a little balsamic and salt flakes, and is just a massive hunk of warmed, homemade bread, with a drizzle of oil. I couldn't taste any garlic. I could see a couple of rosemary leaves but it tasted pretty plain. Very dense and bready. Lovely homemade type bread with a chewy/oily, caramelised base - but just basically a dish of heavy, plain bread. I could only get through about a third of it and that was my lunch. It was a full meal of (more or less) bread. It wasn't really light like focaccia, but more like a sourdough density and would have been better (in much smaller portions, and toasted) with soup or served as a share plate with dips. Pictures don't show the size too well as it was about 4cm thick, and as wide as the plate. Normally balsamic is mixed with the oil, so you don't get just a mouthful of plain balsamic too. While it was well presented, the taste wasn't there.

The kids cheeseburger had a tiny meat pattie and American style cheese on a big bread roll with no sauce. It was odd that there was no spread or sauce or pickles or anything (see picture). The bun was too big for such little filling.

The chips were good. Mum said she reckons they were the best she's had in Goulburn. I thought they were quite nice too. We'll cooked, well seasoned, not greasy or cold. The gravy was a bit too runny for me - it makes for messy eating.

I asked for no ice in the orange juice and was given ice in it.

Staff were friendly. The place was fairly clean.

This place could be okay if you're looking for a substantial meal and happy to pay $30-$50 each, or just for a beer, but there aren't many tasty in-between options for a light lunch. You can have a bowl of vegies, a side salad, a bowl of mashed potato, a bowl of chips, a plate of chicken or a big hunk of bread. None are particularly interesting, or a complete meal.

Room review**
To say this room is creepy is an understatement, not just my room but the entire upper level. I wish they matched the accommodation with the pub renovations.
My floors are squeaking with no one there, the decor is from the friggen 1800's, needs a dam good smudge and revamp.
I don't overly feel safe either as my window does not lock. I would give this one a miss unless you are coming for the pub.

Kids menu food was very tasty and well presented.
I ordered fish pie from specials board, sadly it was just a runny boiling hot broth on top with cold gelatinous lumps underneath. It had obviously been microwaved, probably from frozen. No pastry or bread provided. For $29, it was disappointing.

Clay and I have been visiting the southern Railway for a year now , staff and publican had always been extremely friendly and bend over backwards for us always. Rooms are very clean and tidy the whole pub is full of heritage character which has drawn us to here our home away from home. Locals are just beautiful people we have become their family now and always get a smile and huge welcoming when we arrive.

Chips made in-house from fresh potatoes with skins on! Sweet and full of natural flavour! Keep it up! Damn good steak too. The salad could do with a bit more than 2 pieces of torn off oak-leaf lettuce and 2 shreds of carrot - bit of work needed there. Pleasant old-fashioned railway pub ambience.

From the first phone contact with Trish continuing until we had finished our meal and left the premises the service was perfect.
Great menu options and meal was delicious.
We were a group of 13. The service was friendly and curtious by all members of staff. Those attending to us as also other members attending outside tasks

It is a very simple menu executed to perfection. Everyone in the group got a different meal and we were all very happy. Moreover, the drinks menu - especially the wine - was excellent ??'? definitely will eat here next time I'm in town!

Massive portion sizes, amazing service, cozy and relaxed. Lunchtime special of lamb chops for $15 were amazing!

Do yourself a favour - have a feed before catching the train.. Worth a weekend drive from Gungahlin or North Canberra if you're feeling adventurous.

It's a bit outdated, the photos I've seen for this place only shows the good parts. The rest is quite cramped, bit dark and dingy. There's a difference between heritage and run down. Just really a place for drunks and loud mouthed traidies. The food and service however are very redeeming, beautiful full sized Aussie pub food, inexpensive. worth it for that.

Place has lost a bit of its charm since the renovations. Thank god they kept the original front bar but where has the pool table gone??? What are the kids supposed to do on a weekend now... Bar staff are still great, thankfully it still seems to have retained some locals rather than being just a soulless and empty pub aimed solely at the tourist accommodation market.

Great place to stop for a bite to eat, and enjoy a fresh beverage when travelling to and from Canberra at an affordable price.
Nice atmosphere, friendly service and beautiful decor. It's a pleasure to stop and take a break. Highly recommended.

There is a lot to love about this pub. Cosy nooks with fireplaces . Bigger spaces for people watching. Check out that group at the main bar. It's like a scene from Cheers! The decor is a really comfortable and inviting mix of retro and country styling. We would have loved to have seen some craft beers on offer but we appreciate that this pub has stuck with the classics. The food is really, really good . There are the usual choices but some very interesting alternatives as well. Everyone makes a burger and a schnitzel but not as good as these. The chicken pot pie was huge! Steaks were so flavoursome and tender. Cooked to perfection. Very nice to see house made nuggets for kids as well. We wish we had a local like this Sydney. Lucky Goulburn!

Popped in on the way back from Wagga in search of a Sunday roast. It did not disappoint, infact one of the best I've had in a long time. Only needed a Yorkshire to top it off. Portion size was huge. Perfectly cooked veg and nice bite sized potatoes. Will definitely come in again next time we are down this way.

Old fashioned pub, far too few of them these days, quite music, good beer and genuine people. Refreshing.

Now I've gotten over being refused entry for no mask (I'd admittedly been in my own world for weeks and had no idea COVID had gotten so bad, and was peeved to see people at the bar without masks when I was refused entry) I'll write a proper review.
A decent hotel with friendly clientele, and drinks that are a fabulous price.
I look forward to seeing what the renovations are, and hope they can continue the incredibly cheap drinks after completion.
Nice to see a pub that isn't a mini casino, too

Finally a pub with some actual culture. The last bastion of the good Ol' days when pubs were pubs and not hipster clubs. Clean, spacy, good prices, and classic style.

Dedicated staff who look after their regulars and treat all patrons with respect and a friendly chat. True legends they are.

The pub community here is as "True Blue" as it gets; respect them they'll respect you, always down for a yarn, classic Aussie crude humour, wisdom from the golden oldies, and a joyous drinking culture that would make "Irish Spirit" in us proud.

Tempted to travel to Goulburn more often if nothing but for the pub and the great people who dwell there.

Would recommend for anyone who hates what pub culture has turned into today. Second only to the Irish Pubs themselves.

Service was friendly and the rooms were clean. Balcony access for guests was great. Decor was a little dated but in keeping with the rest of the pub. Well worth the cost to stay here.

Had the 12 dollar steak meal. The steak even though it was 12 dollars was not nice at all and the mushroom gravy felt watered down.
We came here last year roughly around the same time and had an amazing meal...
I'm not sure what happened, but I will not be eating here again.
