Sat in the front bar for the footy. The meals were very average (if not poor) compared to the other pubs in town. It was not very busy, which turned out to be no surprise. We ordered a few rounds of Guinness which turned out to be flat, and when we asked the bartender about it he said this is how it should be.

The fire was barely burning and the front bar was quite cold, we ended up trying to restart it because the bartender seemed to have no interest despite having no other customers to serve.

When broaching this with management they said there weren't enough people in the bar to worry about firing it up. Being so early in the night (7.30pm) I was extremely disappointed. It was freezing!

Used to be a hit. Will not be returning.

A casual saturday lunch over the kings birthday long weekend after visiting the nearby farmers market.
A great venue located in the heart of town that caters for everyone.
Can't fault the service or the food to be honest....traditional Aussie pub fare that was served in a timely manner and was delicious!
If you're after tasty pub meals, cold beers and good friendly service you can't go wrong here.
Wish we had a pub like this one back home!

We dined here and the food was excellent, the steak was cooked exactly how we ordered. The tomahawk being 900gm was exceptional value for $65 with four sides. The dinning room was nicely lit and far enough away from the live band that we were not affected and could enjoy the music after dinner. Would definitely recommend.

Recently, we held my fathers wake in the public bar where he had many a colourful time, and it was incredibly disappointing. The plans I made with the manager fell on deaf ears, and the platters were disgusting. Over cooked sausage rolls, stale sandwiches, and blah service! No speakers for music, we were shoved down the end where all the gambling TV's were blaring and no opportunity to display photos of our Dad on the screen. All this for $1000. I requested to see the Manager to find out what happened, and she was nowhere to be found. If you couldn't give what I asked for, then say NO! It's too late to find out at the wake for a man I adored that it couldn't be done as I requested.

While we were in Port Fairy we had dinner here on a Tuesday night. The meals were great particularly the steak. One of the best steaks I have eaten. What made it even better was that the staff made us feel super welcome, particularly my 10 month old.
So good we went back again on the Thursday. Will visit again when in Port Fairy.

I booked a table at the bistro online for 5pm. Upon arrival we were told that the bistro doesn't open until 5.30pm. The sign outside also said 5pm. Why take the booking? Another group there was in the same boat as us. Very frustrating so we left.

Lovely and cheerful staff member, food very disappointing. My husband had the seafood chowder, it lacked seafood, potatoes, corn. It was more of a soup, considering cost it was a small portion I had the ribs which were nice though chips and onion rings were cold.

I have very happy memories of this pub. The public bar has not changed much over the years, and I'm grateful. Our family has come here since its inception, and many wakes and birthdays have been held here. Lots of memories, and I have a soft spot for the public bar. The stain glass is amazing, too!

We had a great experience & meal here this evening while travelling through in our caravan.
It was parma & pot night which was a bonus! The parmas (chicken schnitzel!) was so delicious, especially alongside some delicious chips, winter vegetables & gravy. The chips & aioli was the best we have ever had! Lovely staff & a great location. We will definitely be back!

A bloody good Parma. Crunchy chips with right amount of salt, nice salad with good variety and yummy dressing. Juicy chicken with generous toppings (I had the Italian Parma) and the garlic aioli was really good. Topped off with an icy beer

Top effort guys, I'll definitely be back

Didn't stay there but had a great evening meal and drinks. Great local atmosphere with fires keeping everyone warm. Guinness on tap. Loved my T Bone steak and scalloped potatoes and the wife had a huge fisherman's basket. Would go back anytime.

We were in Port Fairy for five nights, coming from Central Victoria. We tried the hotel the first night, and were very happy with our meals. So much so, we returned each night of our stay, and pretty much worked our way through most of the menu.. Every meal was great, and on our final night my wife had the Pork ribs which she described as fabulous. Service was always very
good and friendly We would highly recommend Star of the West hotel for great meals.

We didn't expect much from the pub but we were pleasantly surprised with the food and the speed of service. We had two kids meals (fish and chips which were a bit over cooked), a chicken schnitzel and the steak and Guinness pie. The schnitzel was great but the pie was superb. Mushy peas for the win! The only issue was it was on the expensive side. Flavour was very good. The beer selection there was the usual Carlton draught range range. Don't expect anything special but the pirate life on tap was decent enough.

After a long day travelling to Port Fairy from rural Victoria for a well deserved holiday, my family and I were very keen for a delicious meal at the Star where we have visited multiple times over the last two decades.

While arriving, my dad stated that he had a booking to which the manager said there was no booking made for us. After sorting through their mistake of not actually booking us when my dad had rang earlier in the week, we were sat in the marquee.

After sitting for a while I decided to go and get some menus as they had failed to provide us with some while sitting us.

I walked to the bar and asked the blonde lady who wears glasses if I could please have some menus. She was extremely rude and demanded to know where we were sitting, if we had a reservation, and who had sat us. Simply just from asking for a few menus!!!

After finally getting some menus, ( not from her) while gobsmacked I described the horrible ordeal to my family and we decided to leave.

As we left, I spoke to to the manager about what had happened and he was very happy to stand up for her and excuse her extreme rudeness for the fact that they were very busy.

Do not visit this place. I thought it was just this specific lady behind the bar who doesn't know how to talk to customers, but it is clear that the manager also doesn't care.

The stump was fully booked so we decided to give the star a go, would have been better off driving back to Warrnambool & eating elsewhere. Asked for a bowl of chips for my Daughter, told no we can't do a bowl of chips... But can do a chips & nuggets? A bit odd to me, never been refused a bowl of chips at a pup, but whatever.. Asked to swap our salad for veg on our mains, not an issue, sweet. However charged $2.50 extra each. Meals come with salad, sent it back because we asked & paid for veg, they come back with a tiny portion of frozen beans & corn, a piece of sweet potato, I think?? & a potato.... Really disappointing. First & last time we'll waste our money.

Came here tonight as limited options in Port Fairy on Wednesday and expecting a good country pub feed but was disappointed. Burger was bland and small patty with McDonald's spec bun and came with bacon despite asking to have it removed. Wife had grilled fish and looked like it was done under the griller in the oven rather than having any care or expertise applied on a hot plate. Kids meal was fine. Staff seemed sad and think this shows up in the food and service.

Venue has an odd set up with smoking section grabbing the best spot out front. Food was ok but no options for Gluten Free. Rest of the menu was a but limited. Would go elsewhere if you were a foodie. Otherwise it covers most bases if you're after a quick drink or bite.

We stayed at the star of the west over the Christmas period and were very pleased with the whole experience especially there new breakfast menu the oats were phenomenal, the berry compote and coconut on top just made it! Not to mention all the staff were very friendly and did a great job considering it was there first week doing a breakfast menu, off to a great start for sure!

Very disappointed. I am gf. Had 3 things gf. Ordered the steak, they wouldn't do veg or mash we can give you extra salad they said. I asked for my steak to be well done and it was raw and i mean supermarket cold section raw. Couldn't eat it. Walked out having eaten nothing. No care given by wait staff when showed them the steak. They said no it's steak night we only cook them medium. I said we were not told this and sorry but if your paying for it it should be cooked to your liking. Will never return here. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere else to eat.

Awesome staff, awesome food, unreal hospitality and music. however the short female security guard was horrible and gave us nothing but grief for no reason. Apparently talking loudly is a form of rough housing which is completely unacceptable by a security guard

Stay here over one night. Very bad experience. Guest drunk and singing song whole night. There's a big balcony connect each room. At 1am guest still singing very loud. No reception at front desk to complain this thing. No one can ask the guest keep quiet and we can't sleep. Will complain this forever.

My husband and I had our post wedding recovery lunch at the Star of the West in June 2022 and we cannot recommend it highly enough. Debbie, Neil and the venue exceeded all of our expectations. Organising a wedding can be overwhelming (as it turns out!) but Debbie and her staff made our recovery completely seamless.

In the lead up, we organised everything directly with Debbie who was just a phone call or text message away. She accommodated every single one of our requests. This included a completely personalised menu, which we came up with over the phone with Debbie and the chef, as well as a private function room complete with the open fires roaring away all afternoon (perfect for a winter event in Port Fairy!). The food we requested included delicious slider burgers, fish and chips, calamari and chips as well as chicken skewers with slaw. As per our request for 'mini' hand around food, Debbie organised little bamboo boats to serve all of the food in, which was perfect for guests as they got to enjoy a taste of everything.

On the day, nothing was too much trouble. Neil accommodated extra requests from guests for more burgers, fish and chips etc. and made sure everyone was looked after. We had booked the venue from 1pm and everyone kicked on well into the evening. The private room, separate from the rest of the pub, was also ideal as it allowed us to shut the doors and play our music without bothering other people at the pub. Even a second round of food was brought out later in the afternoon to make sure everyone had had enough.

We can't thank Debbie and Neil enough for looking after us so well and ensuring we had the best possible time at our recovery! If you're considering an event (or even just dinner), we strongly recommend the Star of the West.

Accommodation is basic to say the least, at $130 per night would expect to be able to access tea and coffee making facilities . Shared bathrooms are underwhelming with no area to keep your clothing and towels dry.
Won't be recommending this unless you are absolutely desperate.

Well
It was the only place in town that wasn't booked out for dinner so we ate here. Not recommended unless you're in the same position. Food did not live up to basic pub standards. Do not order the Mac and cheese unless you have a enduring love of Kraft box Mac and cheese and want to glow in the dark. Avoid the brisket - burnt and dry. Chips are over salted. Although the beer is lovely and cold - you'll need a pint or two after the overly salted food. Some of the staff seem a bit sad and unimpressed which is coming out in the service, some of the team though were ok and helpful - that, and the cold beer, is what makes this 1 star not none.

Paid $45 for a piece of overcooked steak, with some Easy Mac and steamed carrot on the side. They could have attempted to make it look nice.

Really enjoyed a meal with the family. Atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Chicken parmigiana was the biggest I had ever eaten. Great value
