Town Hall Hotel, North Melbourne VIC

This place does indeed have the appearance stated in previous reviews. Dark, somewhat subterranean.. the exact opposite of many modern steel, glass and polished-wood venues. And that really appealed to us, it's a bit like an old English pub where you can hear yourself, and others, talk. The food was excellent, on both occasions we went on our week-long Melbourne holiday. The roo on mashed potato and then the daily roast (pork on my day), were flawless.
The waitstaff was friendly and helpful.
Honestly, if I lived here, this would be my local.

Really nails that grungy inner-city old school pub atmosphere, with springy floors, tired carpet and an eclectic selection of locals on hand. There are lighter eating and drinking areas in the adjoining laneway but that's not what you come here for - most of these old pubs have been gentrified so enjoy it while it stays this way. Didn't sample the menu but the drinks were cold and service was prompt. If it's not to your preference there's plenty of other options nearby.

A dark and grungy basement, a trampoline for the floor in the meals area, and a thousand eyes stating at you as you eat. You wouldn't want to be eating a steak in there on good Friday. But looking from the outside in, I assume God has forgiven.

Quirky and funky. Have been wanting to visit this pub for ages. Not a fan of the big beer farms in the burbs, the old fashioned vibe is a breath of fresh air. Finally got there on a Friday for lunch and we had the dining room practically to ourselves. Friendly staff, the food was magnificent and very reasonably priced. Great blues music in the background - could actually hear each other talking which was a bonus. Will definitely go back. Highly recommended.

Great atmosphere in the front bar, full of rock n roll memorabilia. Saw the Cramps cover band, Hypno Sex Ray, then chatted with locals until stumps!
