There are some solid pokies venues spread across Geelong - from the CBD hotels on Ryrie Street through to the bigger clubs in Norlane, Corio and Grovedale. All up, 12 venues across ten suburbs with 637 machines between them.
The CBD has two venues - Jokers on Ryrie with 47 machines and the Phoenix Hotel with 28. Both are centrally located and within easy walking distance of the waterfront and train station.
Two of Geelong's better known venues are in Newtown. St Lords has 59 machines and the Great Western Hotel 36, both on or near Pakington Street which is one of Geelong's main restaurant and bar strips.
The Sphinx Hotel in North Geelong is one of the city's most recognised venues with 63 machines. Bell Park Sport and Recreation Club in Hamlyn Heights adds another 28.
The Shell Club in Corio is one of Geelong's most interesting venues - a registered club with 77 machines that traces its origins back to 1952 when it was formed by Shell Oil refinery workers at the nearby Geelong refinery. The refinery has since closed but the club has reinvented itself as a modern community venue while keeping its working-class roots.
The Norlane Hotel is one of the largest gaming venues in the area with 84 machines, located in the northern suburbs about 8km from the CBD.
Geelong RSL in Belmont has 72 machines and is a well-established club on the south side of the city, a short drive from the CBD across the Barwon River.
The Grovedale Hotel is the largest venue in the Geelong area with 79 machines, located in the southern suburbs about 8km from the CBD. A popular local pub with a strong following in the area.
St George Workers Club in Geelong West has 35 machines, and the Valley Inn Hotel in South Geelong adds another 29 - both within a few kilometres of the CBD.
